Hemi-Walker is not good for a patient who recently had a stroke because of which gait issue?

Slowness

Rigidity

Asymmetry

Gait symmetry after a stroke is a key factor in choosing an assistive device. Many people who’ve had a stroke walk with an uneven pattern—one leg bears more weight, the step lengths differ, and the timing between limbs is off. The hemi-walker provides support on the involved side, but its design favors a specific, unilateral form of support. When gait is markedly asymmetric, this can allow the strong, unaffected side to do most of the work and may not encourage loading and stepping of the weaker side in a balanced way. That’s why, early after a stroke when asymmetry is common, a hemi-walker isn’t ideal: it doesn’t promote the symmetrical weight-bearing and coordinated timing needed to reduce asymmetry. As symmetry improves, the hemi-walker can become more helpful.
